Series of Unfortunate Events is a tale of Lemony Snicket [Jude Law] recounting the stories of the three Baudelaire children following the loss of their parents in an unexplained house fire. The three are sent to their “closest” relative, the crazy Count Olaf [Jim Carrey] whose only care for the children is the huge fortune left in their name by their rich parents.

The film uses eccentric characters and comedic scenes throughout, with a combination of dramatic escapes and cliffhanging adventure to keep the audience engaged. Director Brad Silberling incorporates mountains of greys and dull colours into the film, giving it a sad tone. Overall an exciting and comedic film, it is let down by occasional moments of poor acting by some of the characters, and a slightly over-the-top illogical plotline, such as flesh eating leeches, a lack of care from authorities for the children, and ultra-high-powered light reflecting mirrors.

As a childhood favourite of mine, it’s hard to criticise the film. However, in accordance with FudgeFace review laws, this movie receives a 7/10.

Final rating: 7/10 fudges.
